First look at some animal pictures from our trip to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
Much more to follow …
Yesterday was one of those typical four seasons in one day type of Melbourne days. Around lunchtime, we attended the wedding of some friends in the city at the registry office in old treasury building on Spring St. After the ceremony, the photos were in treasury gardens, in the beautiful sunshine. The reception was not scheduled until much later in the afternoon, so we headed home for lunch. About 3pm a HUGE storm passed over Melbourne, with heavy rain an much hail. The storm had all but passed by about 4pm, and only then did we see the damage it caused. Our vegetable garden was shreaded, and the whole suburb was covered in green leaves that were cut from the trees by the hail and wind.
Later on we caught the train back to the city to catch the 109 tram to Port Melbourne, and it was becoming clear the storm hit the city pretty hard. First our train couldn’t stop at Southern Cross Station because the roof had collapsed, and then the tram got stuck at Crown because the road was flooded. In the end, we decided the best way to get to the reception was to take off our shoes and walk/wade! Turns out everybody was having trouble getting into Port Melbourne, and we weren’t so late after all. It all made for an exciting day that none of us will forget in a hurry.
Last year I made a compost bin to help with the garden, partly as a way to get rid of the huge amount of leaves that fall from the trees in the front garden in Autumn. Based on the helpful material I found at the Backyard Gardener, I was able to adapt the 3-bin wooden design they describe into a 2-bin one that is more compact.
The first lot I turned out pretty well – it seems the veges don’t seem to be complaining too much. The second lot looks even better, probably because it’s been a better mix of green and brown. Now it’s summer, the lawn clipping seem to be helping improve the compost.
And do not fear – the green wood you see is not CCA treated pine (i.e Copper Chrome Arsenate) but untreated pine with a water based paint.
